OCT-SM-200 Soil Moisture Probe
A probe reading volumetric moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity at two depths - buried and forgotten for two full seasons.
A single surface reading lies. After any irrigation event the top layer is saturated while the root zone is still dry, and an irrigation decision taken from a surface probe alone stops the event early and then repeats it two days later.
So this probe measures at 20 cm and at 45 cm on the same stem. The difference between the two readings is what tells you whether the water reached the roots or ran over them.
It also measures electrical conductivity, the salinity indicator - a real concern on reclaimed land and wherever well water is used for irrigation.
