Field Installation Guide for Soil Moisture Sensors
Where a probe goes and why, at what depth, and how the cable is protected - the errors that ruin the data are installation errors, not device failures.
An illustrated field guide for the installing technician and the farm operator. It begins with choosing a representative position inside the irrigation zone: why the probe does not go at the end of the line, nor at the lowest point, nor under permanent shade, and how the point that genuinely represents the zone is selected.
Then depth: one probe at 20 cm and one at 45 to 60 cm depending on rooting depth, with the requirement that both sit in the same vertical column and at the same distance from the nearest emitter.
Then execution: excavating to a workable diameter, seating the probe against undisturbed soil rather than loose backfill, replacing the layers in their original order, and burying the cable along a defined route marked visibly above ground so that weeding and tillage equipment do not find it first.
It closes with the commissioning check: how to confirm both readings make sense after the first irrigation - a fast response at 20 cm and a lagging one at depth - and what it means if the deep probe shows no response at all, or responds instantly.
