Backend Engineer - Laravel
Building and extending the data platform that ingests device readings over MQTT, stores them, and produces the monthly reports and per-site dashboards.
Details
You will work on a Laravel platform ingesting readings from thousands of field devices over MQTT. The hard part is not volume but reliability: a field unit may lose connectivity for days and then send a deferred batch, and the platform has to absorb that without losing or duplicating a reading.
You will build the reporting layer on top of the raw readings rather than in place of them. The standing rule is that any figure in a monthly report stays traceable to the reading that produced it, years later - because that report goes to a bank.
You will work on the multi-site dashboard with per-site permissions, and on PDF and CSV export in Arabic and English with full right-to-left support.
The role is remote within Egypt, with periodic meetings in Cairo and an occasional site visit: whoever writes the alerting logic should see the unit that triggers it at least once.
Requirements
- At least three years with PHP and Laravel in real production systems.
- Solid relational database design and the ability to write efficient queries against large tables.
- Experience building, documenting and automatically testing APIs.
- Familiarity with MQTT or a comparable messaging protocol, or a clear willingness to learn it.
- Writing tests as part of the work, not as a follow-up task.
- Competent with Git and working under code review.
- Clear written communication - remote work runs on what is written, not on what is said in a corridor.
What we offer
- Fully remote within Egypt on flexible hours.
- Social and medical insurance.
- A machine of your choosing and a budget for tools and subscriptions.
- An annual learning budget.
- A product with a measurable physical effect: the code you write ends in a cubic metre of water that was not wasted.
